Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is a Portuguese politician, legal scholar, and professor who served as the President of Portugal from 2016 to 2026. A graduate in Law from the University of Lisbon, he built a distinguished academic career in constitutional and administrative law while also becoming one of Portugal’s best-known political commentators. A long-time member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), he served as party leader from 1996 to 1999 before returning to academic and public life. Elected President in 2016 and re-elected in 2021, he was widely recognized for his close engagement with citizens, accessible communication style, and active role in representing Portugal at home and abroad. Throughout his public career, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has combined scholarship, political leadership, and public service, remaining one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary Portuguese democratic life.
