António José Seguro is the President of the Portuguese Republic, elected in 2026 with the largest popular vote ever received by a presidential candidate in Portugal. His career spans public service, academia, and business, underpinned by a longstanding commitment to democratic values, ethical leadership, and European cooperation.
Before assuming the presidency, Seguro served as a Member of the Portuguese Parliament and the European Parliament, Secretary-General of the Socialist Party, and held ministerial office. Throughout his political career, he championed democratic reform, greater transparency in public institutions, and policies promoting social cohesion, equal opportunity, and civic participation.
Seguro holds a degree in International Relations and a master’s degree in Political Science, and taught Political Science and International Relations at university level for nearly two decades. Between 2016 and 2026, he also pursued entrepreneurial ventures in agriculture and tourism, bringing together experience across politics, academia, and business with a strong focus on sustainable development and Portugal’s role in Europe and the wider world.
