Nuno Crato, GCIH, GCIP, is a professor-researcher of mathematics and statistics at Cemapre (ISEG, University of Lisbon), a member of the French Scientific Council for National Education (CSEN), a visiting scientist at the European Commission’s JRC in Italy, and a founding member of Lisbon Economics and Statistics of Education.
He served as president of the Portuguese Mathematical Society (2004–2010), Taguspark (2010–2011), and Minister of Education and Science (2011–2015), introducing reading fluency and mathematics proficiency goals, stronger curricula and assessment, compulsory English and vocational pathways, and extending compulsory schooling from 9 to 12 years. During his term, dropout and retention rates declined and Portugal improved in PISA and TIMSS, reaching or surpassing OECD averages.
He has authored and edited several books on education and mathematics, including The School Textbook, Learning, and Improving a Country’s Education, and has published internationally. He received awards from the European Mathematical Society (2003) and the European Commission (2007).
